Bariatric surgery and joint replacements
Between 2012 – 2020 a clinical trial was conducted to see if there were benefits for patients to undergo bariatric surgery if they needed a total knee arthroplasty (TKA), or knee replacement. The findings showed significantly fewer participants who underwent bariatric surgery prior to having a TKA had a reduced number of surgical complications with some no longer needing the joint replaced once losing the weight.
If you are considering having weight loss surgery and also have a knee joint issue, the surgeons at Adelaide Bariatric Centre keep up to date with current or recent studies into how losing weight can help with other medical issues, such as joint pain or diabetes.
