Dehydration after bariatric surgery
Staying hydrated after bariatric surgery is especially important, as your stomach’s capacity is significantly reduced, and you may have a hard time drinking large amounts of fluids at once. Here are some tips to avoid dehydration post-surgery:
-
Sip Small Amounts Frequently: Aim to drink small amounts of fluids throughout the day. It’s better to sip consistently than to drink a lot at once, which could cause discomfort.
-
Choose Hydrating Beverages: Opt for clear fluids like water, herbal tea, or broth. Avoid sugary drinks, caffeine, or carbonated beverages as they can irritate your stomach and lead to dehydration.
-
Electrolytes Are Key: Dehydration isn’t just about water—it’s also about keeping your electrolytes balanced. Consider adding an electrolyte supplement to your daily routine or drinking beverages with added electrolytes (e.g., sugar-free sports drinks or oral rehydration solutions).
-
Avoid Drinking with Meals: Drinking too much fluid with meals can make you feel too full, preventing you from eating enough. Wait about 30 minutes before or after eating to drink liquids.
-
Track Fluid Intake: Aim for at least 1.5 litres of fluids per day. This can be challenging early on, but slowly increasing intake can help.
-
Use a Straw: Some people find that sipping through a straw allows them to drink more comfortably after surgery. However, be cautious as some people experience air swallowing or bloating with straws.
-
Monitor Signs of Dehydration: Be mindful of symptoms like dry mouth, dark yellow urine, dizziness, or fatigue. If these occur, it’s important to increase your fluid intake right away.
-
Avoid Alcohol: Alcohol can dehydrate your body and irritate your stomach. It’s best to avoid it, especially in the early months following surgery.
